How Much Did Mary Know?
“The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire.” Marshal Ferdinand Foch
I recently watched “Soul on Fire,” the true story of John O’Leary. At nine years old, John survived severe burns over his entire body, defying a 1% chance of survival. It was a “huge” miracle, fueled by faith and the support of his family and community. John’s story reminds us that while we can’t always choose the path we walk, we can choose how we walk it.
We all have crosses to carry; we don’t get to choose their size, only the attitude with which we bear them. It’s in seasons of adversity when we grasp what’s most important in life, what really matters. One of my heaviest crosses came when my oldest son was two. Diagnosed with encephalitis, he spent fifteen days in the hospital. The first MRI painted a “horrible picture” of crater-like holes in his brain. After talking to the neurologist, we did not know if he would make it.
In those pre-digital days, word of mouth ran like wildfire. Rosaries and masses were offered; a priest came to bless him. Then came the impossible: a second MRI one week later. The radiologist was stunned. The holes weren’t just better; they were gone. “Not even a scar,” he told us. My husband and I hugged each other. We had witnessed a miracle.
During that week of waiting, I discovered an inner strength I didn’t know I possessed. We made the best of our hospital stay, walking up and down the corridors while greeting nurses and visiting playrooms. We focused on hope. Sometimes, we are so focused on the crisis that we miss the resilience being forged within us during the fire.
Not every miracle is a medical marvel. God works in the “small” ones too, and sometimes, in the most unexpected places:
Even the person looking back at you in the mirror is a miracle. Yes, you are God’s greatest miracle.
Today, John O’Leary is an inspirational speaker. He once threw up from nerves before speaking to a small group, yet he pushed through. At six-years-old, we had another scare with my son, but an MRI showed that his brain was completely normal. John’s life, and my son’s life, are proof that miracles are happening all around us. We just need to open our eyes to witness them.
