There is renewed effort to squash a surge in pro-life legislation in the U.S.. Online platforms are censoring ultrasound pictures of preborn individuals. Instead of evidence, the media presents readers with a narrative which taps into the emotions and lifestyles of the pregnant women who seek abortion.
For example, a Congressperson in recent weeks wrote an op-ed piece in which she explained why she had an abortion. Rep. Jayapal stated:
“It had to be my choice, because in the end, I would be the one to carry the fetus in my body, I would be the one to potentially face another emergency cesarean section, and I would be the one whose baby could suffer the serious, sometimes fatal consequences of extreme prematurity. I could not simply hope for the best — I had to make a decision based on the tremendous risks that had been clearly laid out for me. I decided I could not responsibly have the baby.”
There is a major problem with such a viewpoint: Rep. Jayapal speaks to her discomforts and potential outcomes from her pregnancy, but laws are not concerned with potential dangers. The law must be based on principle.
The real issue regarding abortion must be: is there one person or two involved? If there are two, then no matter what the reasoning by one person, justice requires the state take into account the second person's perspective and rights. Otherwise, murder would not be punished in our society because the rich or powerful (or bigger or stronger) would have more rights than those who are weak, poor and vulnerable. We know that murder is the unjust taking of someone's life, thus denying them natural rights. Without laws, we would have an unworkable community without a common good.
When Roe versus Wade declared abortion legal in 1973, it was without the vision of the modern ultrasound.
Anyone who has been pregnant understands even at eight weeks into a pregnancy, the life inside the uterus is not a tumor, but it's a human being separate and distinct from the pregnant woman. Anyone watching the movements of a young preborn baby sees this. The engineering feat of the modern 3D (and now 4D) ultrasound invented by Dr. Baba proves this newly formed human life is rapidly turning into a recognizable baby.
What the abortion supporters want is everyone to accept legal killing of unwanted people.
The preborn, the disabled, those with Down Syndrome, and those in a coma or unconscious state are all vulnerable to being killed. The legal system is designed to protect the marginalized in society. The preborn are the most marginalized people in many countries today.
The pro-life laws being passed in many states are a triumph of rational and logical thinking. The hysterical cries by those who like abortion are growing loud, but our society must ignore these types of things. The law cannot be based on hard cases or emotions. Laws have to be fair. It must be revisited when new evidence is produced, and the 4D ultrasound has to be introduced as evidence for our society to consider what abortion does.
The pregnant woman's temporary state must be balanced against the preborn's value as a separate person with the right to life.
To all those who believe in rational thought, the new laws against legal abortion are a victory whose time is long due. There will be a change in abortion in America, and it will be for the better for all of us.
May all Catholics pray this day comes quickly through the hands of Our Lady.
