Can We Do More this Lenten Season?
We have a great responsibility—to tend and care for our Lord’s creations with love and respect. How are we doing so far? Are we good and faithful stewards?
The task is daunting particularly when we are overwhelmed by events of the day. Of course, we have directions for this responsibility by way of the 10 Commandments and Holy Scriptures. Then the Word became flesh and dwelt among us to show us how to truly live and care for one another and our world.
God and Creation
Although we try to be autonomous, none of God’s creations is self-sufficient. We need to depend on each other to complete each other in service of each other [CCC 340]. Most importantly, we need to depend on God. Oh, if only each and every person on earth followed our Lord’s directions then our world would be so beautiful!
Maybe that sounds simplistic, but there is truth to behold. The beauty of creation—of humanity and nature—reflects the beauty of God our Creator. Creation comes from God’s goodness and we are made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we have a purpose: to protect and share our God-given goodness by the way we live and treat one another and our surroundings—with love and respect, bringing forth the beauty of our existence and our Creator.
Unfortunately, our purpose gets buried when the choices we make cause us to go astray and lose sight of the gifts and graces God has given us. We also lose sight of God. What can we do to keep God in our sights so that we do not lose our purpose and sense of responsibility that come with being children of God?
Simple Steps
Let God touch our hearts. Whether it is to stop and smell the flowers or to gaze upon the stars in the sky, in our quiet moments let us remember that God’s hand is behind the beauty of every creation, great and small. With God’s hand comes everything we need to fortify our union with our Lord so that we never lose our loving desire to follow our Lord’s will and His way.
Pray for help. We are not meant to tackle our responsibilities alone. The saints in Heaven are charged with constantly caring for us. “Their intercession is their most exalted service to God’s plan. We can and should ask them to intercede for us and the whole world” [CCC 2683] just as we should ask Mary, the Queen of Saints, for her intercession to bring us closer to her Son because through Him, with Him, and in Him, we are united with God the Father and Holy Spirit.
Then as good and faithful stewards of all that God has given us through Jesus Christ and nature, creation can flourish with love and respect as God intended. May every one of us fulfill our purpose and responsibility, so no evil has the power to destroy the sacred beauty of our lives and our world.
