I see much banter these days on social media and really by people in general about the evils of division. We even have great quotes from history that a house divided cannot stand, stated by Abraham Lincoln regarding the issues of slavery. Satan is also referred to as "the divider" in scripture. But if division is evil then how do we make sense of Luke 12:51.
In Luke 12:51 Jesus says “Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. “They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.
”What does this mean? It would seem that Christ would come here to unite?
In this passage Jesus himself states that he has come to divide, and divide the most precious of relationships at that. So how do we reconcile Jesus as a divider and Satan as a divider as well? I think that it is really quite simple. What truly divides us is neither Satan nor Christ, but our choice to follow either Satan or Christ. If we choose to follow Satan, then we will divide ourselves from Christ and those who choose to follow him.
I am not sure that we have seen this demonstrated so obviously ever in American political associations as we see it today. There is obviously sides and lines being drawn in the sand today regarding US policy and the left and right. And the more that the right brings God into the picture the more vehemently the left opposes. Politics has taken the form of a deity in today's culture and the political agendas of both parties are the sacred scripture of these new movements. It is outright vile and wicked. Don't be fooled either because some of these parties will stop at nothing to promote and further their agendas. These ideologies have become a part of them, and those who affiliate with a certain political party rather the the Lord of the Universe will serve those ideologies and not the Living God.
The viciousness in which self professed "Catholics" who embrace a culture of death and defy Church teaching is blatant evidence of this as they stop at nothing to hinder the pro life movement and the most pro life president we have ever seen. Oh, and please don't start in with the immigration and environmental issues that the left tries to obscure the true pro life message with. Abortion is the number one issue and the number one driver in politics today. It is all about the "right to choose death and murder over the right to hold people accountable and revere life, life that only God can create and thus only He has the right to terminate. It truly is a power struggle against good and evil, Satan and our Mother Mary, and an assault on all things holy and blessed.
So division is not just a tool and weapon used by Satan but a choice to follow evil or goodness, Satan or Christ, death or life, and eventually damnation or salvation. Yes, these choices are pitted against each other and Satan battles for souls and executes his minions as participants in his mission. So, we must choose wisely, and always hallow God as subordinate to the issues and agendas of this world. They will not last, but the eternal agenda of salvation will, or damnation.
So, choose wisely, we want to be on the right side of the division that Christ brings to this earth. Not even our clergy or pope are safe examples of those who are unaffected by political views and agendas that obscure Truth. We are all human and thus vulnerable to demonic manipulation. That is why prayer is so vital to our souls!
The side we choose will usher in peace in our minds and souls, and cause distress and desperation for our adversaries. The side of Christ sets the world ablaze and on fire! That fire will divide the goats from the sheep and the wheat from the weeds. So, don't be afraid of division, as long as you are choosing the right side of the dividing line. Watch for those wolves in sheep's clothing, desperation yields very effective treachery and confusion. Christ will prevail as promised, we just need to be on the winning side of that dividing line!

I am a wife and mother of two grown sons. Although I am Cradle Catholic, I experienced a profound reversion to the True faith several years ago that motivated and inspired me to dive more deeply into an understanding of the Church and Her teachings, and why She has these teachings and where they come from. Surprisingly, for me, the more I read and discovered, the deeper my love of the Catholic Church and her teachings became. This certainly is a journey that doesn't end, and so as I uncover more amazing facts about our Faith and Church, I just can't help but want to share what I'm learning. So, I began writing for Catholic 365.
I have recently served for a year and a half as the Executive Director of a very active and busy Crisis Pregnancy Center on the West side of Cincinnati. God is so good and does answers prayers, even though He knows at times, we have no idea what we are asking for. The pro life cause is paramount to our times, I am so honored and humbled to have had the experience and opportunity to serve women and the unborn in this capacity! I am also very grateful to God, for allowing me to see for myself, that perhaps such a calling was not His long term plan for me. We go where God seeminly calls us, and for me, that was a return to corporate America. I currently work as a recruiter and sales onboarding specialist where I am helping a Franchising company open and support small businesses that serve seniors and the elderly, giving them opportunities to age in place and live thier final chapters with dignity. It is the other end of the pro life spectrum and such an amazing endeavor!
I love being able to share this great faith of ours and use this platform as a way to express my deep love and devotion to our Lord. We need each other, and this effort has truly become a wonderful way to connect with all of you- my brothers and sisters in Christ!
