Compassion?
A Nigerian seminarian was killed recently after being kidnapped by Islamic terrorists. Michael Nnadi, 18, died at the hands of his kidnappers. There has been ongoing violence in Nigera that seems to be escalating.
Cardinal Sarah has declared some eleven Church members decapitated on Dec 26, 2019 to be martyrs. Currently many Christians are at risk for kidnapping and being killed in the growing tensions. Our Catholic brothers and sisters in Nigeria can't even have security attending Mass.
The Nigeria government is ninety-five percent Muslim in a country with a fifty percent Christian population.
The bishops of Nigeria want us to “make known the atrocities.”
It seems we overseas may help them simply by writing our officials and asking for justice for the Christians in Nigeria.
I have been fortunate to meet some Nigerian priests. A few have lived at my former parish. They taught the children lessons about Jesus. They have ministered to the sick at our local hospitals. They brought a passion to their preaching. I am indebted to them for their inspirational love of Christ.
Nigeria is a place where vocations to the priesthood are thriving. In return, they are now missionaries to us in the West. Many parishes and dioceses benefit from the gift of Nigerian missionaries. We are the universal body of Jesus Christ and when one member suffers, we all share in that suffering.
Please consider offering up prayers, especially the rosary, for peace to return to Nigeria.
If anyone is so inclined in the USA, please wrote a short letter to President Trump or our US Senators or House of Representatives about this issue. If anyone in Europe wants to help, please write your leaders. It could be as simple as a line that says: I am worried about the Christian persecution going on currently in Nigeria. What can we do to help these poor people?
It's a difficult time to be a follower of Jesus Christ in many countries today. We still have a Christian West which has influence, if our leaders know we care.
