No Matter What You Have Done, You Are Still A Loved Child of God!
It is odd to think that Jesus always listens to any saint. I mean, Jesus is God and as such all of the saints should be listening to Him, not the other way around. Well, Jesus did subject Himself to the authority of Mary and Joseph. “He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them.” [Luke 2:51] This speaks of Jesus upon return after Mary and Joseph find Him in the temple.
So, if Jesus was always obedient to Mary and Joseph, why was He still in the Temple without them knowing? Good question! And this made me wonder. It looks like Jesus is being disobedient. But if He was disobedient, He would not have been sinless, which He was. What if it was simply a misunderstanding?
Just earlier in Luke, it tells us that Jesus is 12. The age of 12 was when you were a man. So, Jesus might have thought this was the beginning of His ministry. Or He thought He was a man and could decide for Himself what He did. And as Luke tells us, Joseph and Mary thought He was in the caravan. They just thought He was in their travelling group. This paints a different picture. After all Jesus seems surprised they are looking for Him and that they did not know He was in His Father’s house, the Temple.
We can conclude that if Jesus was obedient to His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph, after He was 12, He surely was obedient before He was 12. One does not suddenly become obedient to their parents. And if Jesus was obedient during His earthly life, would He still retain this obedience in Heaven?
Surely as God, He did not need to be obedient to humans other than to preserve His sinless nature. And this also shows us that Mary and Joseph never asked Jesus to do anything that would have been even the smallest of sins. Their requests of their Son were in line with God’s will. And why would that change in Heaven? Wouldn’t they know even better what is in line with God’s will? And so any requests they make are only ones made in accord with God’s will.
