An author's technology experience – by George Calleja (Christian Author)

Being a Christian author and having my books published on various online ebook stores, technology plays a very important part in my life. I do not consider myself as a wizard in technology, but through experience, I have learnt a big deal about what technology offers to an author.

In all of my writings and sharing, I always focus on the Golden Rule, that is: “Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you.” Why do I focus on this Golden Rule as a Christian? It is because this saying is present in the sacred books of all of the most important religions, including in the gospel for Christians.

You might ask, but what does the Golden Rule has to do with technology? Well, today’s technology is a very important tool to spread the message of “Do not do to others what you would not have them do to you” by most important religions.

My first experience in using a computer goes back around 35 years, when most probably you were still not born. I recall using the computer for the first time at work. It was amazing! The computer came with 1 kB of on-board memory that could officially be expanded externally to 16 kB. Its storage was possible through a cassette tape. Can you imagine that?

Later, in the mid-90s the internet brought with it a revolutionary impact on culture, commerce and my life. This period practically was also the start of Social Networking and which I started to experience the internet on a regular basis. It was a time of learning and discovering what the internet was all about and what it had to offer. The most important thing that I discovered through the internet was how easy and fast it was to reach people. For me, using the email was fascinating… the message would be reached at the other side of the earth within seconds!

In 2012, with the zeal to share peace and unity, I embarked by using Social Networking Sites in a more effective way. As I was still not familiar with Social Networking, how it works and what it is all about, I started reading and asking questions about it. I also started to acquire the knowledge of existing different networking sites, of how they function, what audience they target, what type of messages one can post on them, etc. I also took an interest in what type of hardware and software is required, and other technicalities. It was the beginning to discovering all about Social Networking. At first it seemed to be a complex matter, but as I got familiar with what I was reading, I felt that I could handle it… I was getting prepared for it.

So, during mid-2012 I took the first step and created the website called ‘Peace and Unity in our lives’. The main purpose of this website was to post in it the various inspirational spiritual thoughts which I wrote. Two months later I also started to feature my writings on a Blog and later I also started to use FaceBook.

This was practically the beginning of my adventure on using Social Network. Presently, I also frequently make use of Instagram, MeWe, Spotify, Pinterest, Twitter, WattPad, WordPress, and YouTube amongst others.

As an author, I publish my books through Amazon and SmashWords, and thereafter my books are available in online e-book stores and e-libraries all over the world. It is a very fascinating experience, that from the comfort of my home, my writings are available all over the world. Furthermore, since a year ago, I have ventured further in the use of technology, by making two online Christian courses available through UDEMY. And guess what? I have achieved all this by using basic IT equipment, such as a laptop, a desktop, a camcorder, a microphone and of course my smartphone.

I have shared this experience with you, to encourage you to use technology to spread good value information. Use technology to build bridges between cultures, faith, in politics and throughout each nation. As a Christian author, I feel that I do my part, through the use of technology to spread peace and unity to all. You are also to play your part by the use of technology. Your input for a better world needs to be heard.
