Pope Francis on Friday celebrated his name-day with a group of Rome’s poor and homeless.
The group of 600 people received their second COVID-19 jab under the Papal Almoner’s project. They were part of a large group that had previously received the first jab of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
The Holy See Press Office, said the Pope spent around half an hour with them.
He greeted them and offered each of them a chocolate Easter egg “while respecting all health norms.”
The group sang a song of well-wishes for the Pope’s name-day before he left.
“As he stopped to speak to several volunteers in a joyous and cordial environment, the Holy Father thanked them and encouraged them to ‘continue your hard work!’” read the Press Office statement.
Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the Papal Almoner, offered his gratitude to the organizers of the vaccination campaign.
On Thursday, the Office of the Papal Almoner had announced the pope would celebrate his name-day “with a surprise.”
“It turns out that surprise was a personal visit to Rome’s most vulnerable.”
