There probably isn't a hotter or more controversial topic in the Church today than the denial of Holy Communion to politicians who publicly advance and promote mortal sin.
And truly, as believers in the Eucharist as the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divine physical presence of Christ, there shouldn't be a more important topic in the Church or in the world right now.
Christ's body is being profaned by unrepentant sinful people with the allowance of their Bishops and Priests. I know many Catholics don't like to hear that. Many Catholics choose to define the faith according to their own desires and preferences. Those people are truly not Catholic. To be Catholic is to believe the Eucharist is the very physical presence of God on this Earth, and to receive in a knowingly unworthily state is one of the greatest of sins. To offer the Eucharist to someone knowingly in an unworthy state is the same.
Why does Christ allow His Eucharistic body to be profaned in such a way? Well, Christ allowed his mortal physical body to be profaned during His life.
From the moment of his birth he allowed himself to live among the wicked in the humblest and simplest of places. Of course that innkeeper could have made room for him, and High Priests could have made different choices. The political leaders of the time could have done the right thing. But they didn't. Just like so many of us, who can find a place for Christ in our lives and hearts, but don't. Just like the religious leaders of our day, who offer up the Body of Christ in the Eucharist knowingly to unrepentant sinners, and not just political ones. There are many unrepentant sinners presenting themselves for Holy Communion.
Jesus allowed himself to be arrested by wicked people, scourged and beaten severely by wicked people, humiliated and mocked by wicked people, and finally. crucified by wicked people. The clergy at the time allowed and promoted this treatment of Christ, and the political leaders at the time failed to do the right thing. Whoa to those unrepentant revilers of Christ.
Christ renewed the Earth with His death, he resurrected in triumph. Perhaps Christ is in the process of renewal today. He certainly is dividing the people and sheering his sheep. He is separating the faithful from the unfaithful, and the devout from the lukewarm, whom he reviles the most.
It is time for us to choose sides. Are we on the side of the profaners or of Christ? We can't look to the Church for direction anymore, we can't be sure what side most priests and bishops are on. Look at all the canceled priests, cancelled out just like the apostles and early martyrs of the Church. The faithful were persecuted then, and we will be persecuted now. It's worth it though for Heaven. Heaven comes with a price. A price too steep for many.
