Oh, the good I could have done! The sin of omission.
In our time of abortion and all sorts of evils being passed off as good, we can see evil no longer trying to hide. Evil is flaunting itself and daring us to call it evil. We fear we might offend someone. We forget that by permitting evil by our inaction, we are offending someone greater… God. We must start first by setting ourselves upon Christ and His Church. So, we pull out the big guns of the Catholic Church.
So, what are the “big guns” that we have? Attending Mass and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion is number one. It is far greater than any other big gun we have. Surrendering yourself to Jesus as Jesus surrenders Himself to you. Is there anything more profound or more powerful? We receive Jesus as we give of ourselves. The ‘Amen’ to receive Jesus is our surrender. ‘Amen’ to Jesus and ALL of His teachings.
The other big guns are the Rosary (especially daily), frequent Confession, Adoration, and the works of mercy. It may seem odd that other than the works of mercy, all of the big guns are directed internally. But they are not. They are directed to God. We go to God because He has all the power. Why should the ant try to move a pile of sand if it has a friend with a bulldozer?
In addition to asking for God’s help, we are ridding the world of the only evil that we have control over. The evil within our own hearts. Only when we have removed the evil from within ourselves will we be able to battle the evil in the world and call it evil. Will it be painful? No doubt. But it will be worth it. We remember many people throughout history who stood up against evil against all odds. We just have to remember, that the odds are on our side when we have God on our side.
Jesus, You stood against the evils of the world and the evils within us, paying the ultimate price. May we always rid ourselves of the evils within us remembering the price You paid on the Cross for love of us. Amen
