Saints Jacinta and Francisco Marto: The Inspiring Story of the Fatima Seers

Saint Elizabeth is known as “righteous before God”. She was a cousin to the Virgin Mary and wife to Zechariah. One day, Zechariah went to church to pray for a child. When he was there an angel came to him and said "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born." (Luke 1:13-15).
Zechariah knew that him and Elizabeth were too old for a child, so he was a little skeptical about what the angel had told him. With this uncertainty, his speech was muted until he did what he was told. Elizabeth became pregnant shortly after, at around the same time the Virgin Mary was conceived with Jesus. Mary would visit with Elizabeth until her baby was born. Elizabeth named her son John, and he would become John the Baptist. Zechariah was judged for not naming his son after himself, but he did what the angel had told him in the church and his speech returned. Later years John the Baptist baptized Jesus as an example that all must be reborn of water and the holy spirit.
Saint Elizabeth’s feast day is on November 5.
