One Little Life
Life is a turbulent whirlpool
of sound and reason.
A maelstrom of feelings, ideas, and conditions
in which we struggle helplessly.
We fight to keep our heads
above the seething fury.
We kick and thrash.
Violently treading water
in a vain attempt to stay alive.
No harmonious segue, this.
Rather, a Herculean effort
destined to end in futility.
The Impresario
of this discordant symphony
lifts his hand in pernicious perversity.
We, losing strength and will, let go.
We sink into the depths of despair.
Our final breath
bubbles up to break the surface.
With one audible gasp,
we say our last prayer.
Suddenly,
A hand reaches down
into the murky, tumultuous depths,
and we are brought up!
Thrust into blessed peace!
We suck in hungry gulps
of precious air.
Our lungs are filled.
And satisfied.
Our weary struggle
surrenders
to the Release.
We are saved.
We know not how nor why.
We only know the storm is calmed,
and we lie safe in His Lifeboat.
Safe in His Hand.
