Book Review: Listening for God by Teresa Tomeo
How do to Promote Peace Both Near and Far
With recent events and war raging in Ukraine in March 2022, people of faith come together in prayer to find ways to promote peace and to pray for it. Peace is not just the absence of war, but a place where God and his people come together not just to co-exist, but to live together in harmony and in respect for all people. The question at hand is how can we as a people promote peace both near and far?
It Starts at Home
“Let us pray for peace, and let us bring it about, starting in our own homes." – Pope Francis.
Our Holy Father has made this statement about peace, and a wonderful place to start is at home. Is there someone in your own home whom you are not at peace with? A husband, child, parent, or other close person? Peace does begin at home. Dialogue is important to bring about peace. When there is peace at home, peace can be brought out to the world.
Interactions with Others
Promoting peace outside of the home brings harmony. One way to do this is through active listening and genuine care. People do not feel a sense of belonging and openness when they are not being heard. Therefore, it is so especially important to allow people to be heard, respected, and loved. When they feel this acceptance, peace will come. Positive eye communication, smiling, and care also bring about peace when others feel paid attention to and spoken to in a kind and friendly manner.
Praying for Peace Near and Far
The next step is to pray for peace both near and far. This is a major way to promote peace when we pray each day for peace at home, close by, and in war-town countries. Never underestimate prayer and its power. It can make all the difference in promoting peace throughout the world.
Forgive Enemies and Reconcile When Possible
The hardest thing to do in life is to love those whom we do not care for or who are our enemies. However, the greatest thing we can do to promote peace is to forgive and be a person of dialogue. If you have hurt someone, say you are sorry. If someone is seeking your forgiveness, open your heart to listen to their plea. This can mean the world to someone who feels a sense of alienation, rejection, and marginalization. Take it seriously that being a promoter of peace and praying for is also an invitation to open your heart and love your enemy. If the entire world does this, the world is sure to become a kinder and more peaceful place. Miracles may also begin to happen through your prayer, perseverance, and openness to dialogue even with those whom you do not agree completely with.
