It is being called a “miracle” by countless historians. The average individual can look at what the Ukrainians have been able to accomplish against seemingly impossible odds and many would say it is a miracle.
The head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church acknowledged that Ukraine has been referred to as a miracle in a YouTube video on the same day the pope’s envoy arrived in Western Ukraine.
“That which is taking place on the territory of our homeland is being called the ‘Miracle on the Dnipro (River)’ by some historians,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, in a message recorded March 8.
As Shevchuk explains in the video, the name alludes to another event that took place a century ago. “Something similar took place almost 100 years ago on the Vistula (River), when the Polish army stopped the invasion of the Red Horde, and stood up for independence, the right for the existence, of the revived Polish State. Today, that Miracle on the Dnipro is being forged by our Ukrainian army, stopping this latest invasion of our northern neighbor, who set foot onto our land carrying destruction, carrying death, attempting to destroy the freedom-loving Ukrainian people.”
The Dnieper River is one of the largest rivers in Europe and runs from Russia, through Belarus and Ukraine, and empties into the Black Sea.
Shevchuk also reminded listeners in a previous video that many Ukrainians had told him they were seeing angels over the city of Kyiv as Russia draws closer to the capital city.
The archbishop said it is the power of love which has drawn the entire world to rally around Ukraine. “But the power of love, love for the homeland, by the power of the unity of the Ukrainian people – we amazed the world. We are creating a miracle of a people who demonstrate their love of freedom to the whole world and amazes the whole world,” he said.
As Catholics have just started the penitential season of Lent, we are reminded of the power of love. It was love that conquered the evil of Satan through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. It was love that paved the path to eternal life and forgiveness of sins for the world. It is through Christ that love conquers evil, and it is through the power of Christ that Christians around the world are praying will once again conquer evil by protecting Ukraine.
