"Whatever your hand finds to do, do with your might." - Ecclesiastes 9:10
Part of my conversion journey was going back to work. After 25 years as a stay at home mom, I got a job in retail. I had always worked in an office, but technology had changed since I had last worked, so retail was the logical choice.
Seven years into the job I received a promotion. Stunned doesn’t even begin to describe what I felt about the situation. One of my fellow employees summed it up quite well, “You have a desk?” Yes, a desk, a computer and a phone!
I marveled at God’s hand in this. I had transferred from another location and had I not gotten the transfer, I would never have been given my current position. I also saw God’s hand in the details. My boss is someone I worked with at the old location and she knew me well. The person who had the job before me was not well liked. I was welcomed with a sigh of relief.
I work a lot with my fellow employees, fixing problems (some that I inadvertently created!), giving information, finding resources, or even hand-holding and listening.
I was helping someone with their medical benefits when another employee interrupted and said, “Can I just say something? You’re really doing a good job and we can all see that you care about us and what you’re doing. From the moment you walked in here, you made a point of being friendly.” We all started to cry and did a “group hug.”
Later that day, I thanked God for the opportunity to be in that position, to be there for my coworkers and to be an instrument of His. As I stood at the desk of the one coworker I had helped, I noticed a collection of "Pope" memorabilia. When I asked her where she got the toy Pope mobile and Christmas ornament, she said that the coworker who was so generous in her comments to me, gave them to her. "We're Pope lovers," she said proudly.
We're going to get along fine!
