Matthew 15:6- Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Since the dawn of the Reformation, Sola Scriptura (the Bible Alone--as the sole source of moral teaching) has been the mantra of those who left the Church founded by Jesus. What does the Bible say about this tradition of men?
Jesus commanded His Apostles (the 1st Bishops) to go forth and teach ALL that He instructed them:
Matt. 28:18- Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
Yet Scripture says that not all Jesus taught could ever possibly be written:
John 20:30- Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
John 21:25- Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
And if ALL they were taught was SO vast (that the world could not hold all the books of it) how could they possibly remember it all?
John 14:25- "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
So, if the Holy Spirit is reminding God's Bishops what to teach, then Sacred Tradition is just as inspired as Sacred Scripture, and is to be followed, because (being from the Holy Spirit) it IS the Word of God as well.
Really think about this verse. Many people say that the thing they dislike about the Catholic Church is "all those rules". 'All I really need to be saved is Faith.' IF all you needed to be saved was "Faith Alone", then why does the Holy Spirit need to remind the Apostles all these teachings (rules) of Jesus to relay to us? I think they could remember "just have Faith" without the help.
And how did those 1st Bishops teach the faithful?
2 Thes 2:15- So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter.
Since the beginning of the Church, the teachings passed on from Jesus have been taught in written form (Sacred Scripture--what would later be called The Bible) and in oral form (Sacred Tradition), i.e. those unwritten teachings mentioned in the Scriptures above.
The Church's teachings then, from the Bible, have always been Scripture - the Written Word, and Tradition - The Spoken Word.
Then 1500 years later, along comes Luther, Calvin, and the "reformers".
They start the Protestant tradition of Sola Scriptura, negating the teachings from Sacred Tradition--God's Spoken Word.
Wait--it gets even worse!!!
In the late 4th century, The Church met at several Councils (Hippo, Carthage, etc.) and set the Canon (list) of Scripture for Christians.
PLEASE research it for yourself and you'll see that the Bible had 73 books (46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament).
Again, later, along comes Luther and friends and they decide to remove 7 books from the Old Testament.
Those books are: Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, (as well as...parts of Esther and Daniel).
Luther also wanted to remove James, Jude, Hebrews and Revelation from the New Testament, but the other 'reformers' refused.
PLEASE check independant history:
--The Latin Vulate of St. Jerome (425 AD)--73 books (1100 yrs BEFORE the Reformation)
--The Gutenberg Bible (1454 AD) --73 books (almost a full century BEFORE the Reformation)
Either way, the Non-Catholic Christians of today hold fast to a Bible which has had 7 books removed from it--
A tradition of men that negated the Word of God!
If you love the Bible, how is this tolerable to you?
Here are some other Scriptures that relate to this editing of God's Word:
Revelation 22:19- And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
1 Tim 4:1- The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits
If nothing else, PLEASE ponder and pray on this situation, and either buy a Catholic Bible, or you can read it for free on the web with a simple google search. See what gems of the Faith has been taken from you by Reformation Tradition.
Then please consider this offer to come back to the Fullness of God's Word, written and spoken--The Fullness of Jesus: His One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church
