What Are You Waiting For? (Advent Reflections Parts 1)
As we wrap up this month of May, a month dedicated to our Mother Mary, we should remember that this doesn’t wrap up our prayers to her. It is Mary who will crush the head of the serpent (Gen 3:15). It is Mary who will aid us in the hour of our need “now and at the hour of our death.” It is Mary, the new Eve, who will lead us to her Son, Jesus.
May is the month of Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and mental health awareness month, so all the more reason we should spend the month seeking our beloved Mother’s help. This world is filled with sin and depression, deceitful people and lost children. For many, hope seems scarce and safety out of reach. Many are without mothers and many mothers are without their children (whether through abortion or some other tragedy.) Men and women have died for love of their country and here we squander their sacrifice by mistreating one another and letting go of many freedoms for which they fought so dearly. Mental Health is at an all time low in not only this country but the world. One of the worst of all suicide rates lies among our first responders, our helpers.
In short, we’re a mess and we need our Mother to guide us to be better. We need Christ, her Son, to show us the way (Jn 14:6). That’s all Mary wants, for us to see her Son and follow Him. “Do whatever He tells you,” she tells us (Jn 2:5). And we must.
Don’t let the end of May be the end of your dedication to her. Say your rosary daily. Lead your children, even if only in a decade, so you instill the love of Mother in them as well. Say it in Latin or English or whatever language, but say it. Never stop praying (1 Thes 5:17). Solomon, in his wisdom, knew the power of a mother’s love (1 Kg 3:26). How much more does our Mother, chosen by God the Father Almighty, love us? Pray. Never stop praying!
