Lent a spiritual fight
This battle with Satan is one that we seemingly cannot overcome. The world is going further and further away from God. There are so many places for us to battle with Satan’s attempt to destroy us and our loved ones. And he will not stop. And yet, we have more than enough weapons to battle against Satan and come out victorious.
What are our weapons? We have Jesus Himself. We can receive Him into our very being when we receive Him in Holy Communion. We cannot get any closer to God and thus farther from Satan and his attacks, except when we receive Jesus “without discerning the body". “For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself.” [1 Corithians 11:29]
And beyond receiving God into our very being (as if we need anything more), we can go to Confession and be cleansed of our sins. We can pray the Rosary asking our Mother, who has no stain of sin and thus has forever been untouched by Satan in the slightest of ways, to take care of us. We also have our guardian angel whose sole purpose of existence is to get us to Heaven. We have the rest of Heaven, the angels and saints, looking to help us and even the souls in purgatory, since they can pray for us and do so in a powerful way if we pray and sacrifice to get them released to Heaven.
We have all of that before we even go into the sacrifices that we can make united to Jesus’ Perfect Sacrifice. We can fast, especially on Fridays. We can sacrific in so many ways and even unite the sufferings that we have no opportunity to bypass. It almost makes it too easy. With so many weapons, Satan needs to be afraid of us. Not that we have the power to defeat him, but that we have the weapons that can easily defeat him. And yet, so often we leave these weapons untouched, collecting dust while we collect battle scars and lose our loved ones to Hell. God has made it really easy. We just need to pick up the weapons.
Jesus, Your weapon of choice was the Cross. A weapon that destroyed our death. Help us to carry our cross and use the many weapons at our disposal in our battle with the Evil One that seeks our destruction and the destruction of those we love. Amen.
