Shrines of Italy: Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (Assisi)
The Church of San Zenone stands majestically in the heart of downtown Aviano, Italy. Located in the middle of a small shopping district, the church can be easily identified by the large bell tower directly across from the main entrance.
Very little is known about the history of this church, other than the fact it was named after the Patron Saint of Aviano: St. Zenone. Tradition says that he served as bishop of Verona in the late 4th century, and played a major part in converting the Arian heretics in that region. His episcopate lasted only ten years, but during that time, he influenced many people to either join the Christian Faith or return to its practice.
The Church of San Zenone was built many centuries later to honor the legacy of this great saint, which explains the very Renniance-Inspired architecture associated with many other churches throughout Italy.
The most beautiful features of this church include the many side altars located throughout the main building, which each one being dedicated to a different aspect of the Catholic Faith, such as Our Lady, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, or the conversion of St. Paul.
To the left of the main altar is a small side chapel containing an altar dedicated to the Motherhood of Mary. The presence of a sanctuary lamp in both areas of the church indicate that the Eucharist is reserved here, and thus that the church is still an active parish today.
Just one of the many options available for Sunday Mass if you ever find yourself in Aviano.
