Loving Others By Loving Scripture
In developing The Theology of the Body, JPII confronted today’s false spiritualism. Catholics must develop a less spiritual, but more bodily, more incarnational, and more sacramental vision in living their faith. Through the Eternal Son’s taking flesh “the terrible and tragic rip in the fabric of Creation is being reknit.” The Incarnation is a reversal of the Fall, bringing spirit and flesh together again. In God’s redemptive hands, created realities can once again serve as instruments of grace. The most intimate bodily gesture is a sacramental, a posture of kneeling, prostration, blessing oneself in the Sign of the Cross, kissing [and bowing the head, author]. (Miller in Ball on Sacramentals.)
There was a time when the Holy Name Society was commonplace in a Catholic parish. Its members were men who bowed their head at the Name of Jesus in prayer, in song at every Mass and devotion. Everyone joined in the practice to worship together in this reverential gesture.
Sheed in Christ in Eclipse isolated and analyzed and diagnosed Sheed’s Disease. It is determined through an examination of our conscience on our consciousness of one’s awareness of Christ. Through liturgical revisions of Vatican II and the Revised Roman Missal of 2002, on the Church calendar the feast designed to impress upon all Christians the dignity of the Holy Name of Jesus became another name or Attribute of Jesus until it became obscured: Sheed’s Disease.
What has been the consequence of the loss of consciousness, this eclipse of Jesus in the practice of the Catholic Church? In response to misrepresentations of the "spirit of the Vatican II" Fr. William Most has produced works on Christology and Scripture which express the continuous and ever—vital teaching of the Church. He concludes “the task of authentically interpreting the word of God, whether written or handed on, has been entrusted exclusively (soli) to the living Magisterium of the Church, whose authority is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ."--He continues "This is really the conclusion we reached in our sketch of apologetics. Only the magisterium of the Church has been commissioned to teach by Jesus, the Messenger sent from God. No one else has that right". Hmmmm. This eclipse, this Sheed's Disease, is the crack in the wall for Synodality?
Reviving reverencing the Holy Name of Jesus through the National Association of the Holy Name Society (NAHNS) can right the Barque of Peter. Our Incarnational practice, “In the Name of Jesus let every knee [head, author] bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth and let every tongue confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father. Fr. Most’s echo, “Then there was fulfilled what St. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:9-10: "God exalted Him and gave to Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus, every knee [head, author] should bend, of those in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth." This can also refer to the power of Jesus over satan. The passage is poetic, and so need not mean that Sheol is under the earth. The evangelical theme that has informed all of Fr. Most's theology and pastoral work is: God is alive and well, active in the lives of men, majestic and powerful, yet approachable by the humble and filled with overflowing love that finds its supreme expression in Jesus Christ.
