Fr. Wojciech Giertych, O.P. The Mystery of Divine Love. Manchester, NH: Sophia Institute Press, 2022. Paperback $14.95. eBook $9.99. 128 pages. Available from the publisher.
It is sometimes hard to get away in our busy world. Finally, here is a spiritually nourishing, at-home retreat from Fr. Wojciech Giertych, O.P., the Theologian of the Pontifical Household. It was originally given as a retreat to a group of women a few years ago outside of New York City.
The Mystery of Divine Love unveils new insights on Sacred Scripture. Fr. Giertych reveals how to cultivate the theological and moral virtues by making “eye contact” with God through practical, real-life conferences and the writings of the saints, especially Thérèse of Lisieux.
“I like to compare the faith that we receive at baptism to a computer program,” related Fr. Giertych. “We may have to do something on the computer, but we don’t know how to do it. Then we discover, ‘Hey, I’ve already got the software on my computer, and I can use it!’ And when we use it, there is a moment of joy.”
Father further explains how we are all called to pray regardless of our vocation and weaknesses: “All these moments of our poverty are useful if we treat them like a trampoline and we bounce off them into the arms of God.” “We need to struggle more to enter into a relationship with God than to free ourselves from sin.”
Additionally, you will perceive the connection between faith and reason, as well as their role in Catholic social ethics. “Through hope, we accept that we are being led by God,” shared Fr. Giertych. “As a result, we can express charity, which is love of God and also a love of others in view of God, loving people with that same love that we have received from God, borrowed from His heart.”
