Omnipotence of God
Submitted by Thomas Stidl
Omnipotence is another word meaning all-powerful or almighty. God is all-powerful. He can do anything that He wishes. Can God prevent suffering? Yes. Did the Father prevent His only begotten Son from suffering? No!! Did Jesus ask the Father to eliminate his suffering and death on the cross? Yes, Jesus asked the Father in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper. After communicating with the Father in prayer, Jesus’ response was “not my will but thy will be done”. Why was Jesus’ birth and death necessary? We all know from our bible study that Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
I believe that the Easter vigil prayer says it best, “O Happy Fault of Adam”. This is what brought the eternal Son of God to earth as a human being. By Adam and Eve’s sin, we as human beings were allowed to know God in the person of Jesus Christ, God in flesh. Did Jesus cure the sick and raise the dead while He walked on earth? Yes. Is all the illness and death on earth the fault of God? No. It is the fault of concupiscence. This is the weakness of humanity due to Adam and Eve’s free choice to disobey God. God created human beings in perfect harmony with Himself. Mankind undid that harmony by sin. If Eve had not been so gullible in her encounter with the serpent and Adam had not been a wimp, he should have put his foot down so to speak on Eve setting her morals straight stopping her potential disobedience. All Adam and Eve’s offspring would still be living in perfect harmony with God not tasting illness or death.
Did any good come from or first parent’s sin? Yes. Humanity came to know Jesus as a baby, a growing youth, and a mature adult. We came to know that God is love through Him. The night before He died, He instituted two amazing sacraments. They are Holy Orders for the apostles and future priests and bishops and He left us his true presence in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. For those of you who have doubts about the true presence, try using your Internet search engine for Miracles of the Eucharist, where the Host actually became physical heart flesh. His entire life on earth was dedicated to loving others.
This is why we say at the Easter Vigil, “O necessary fault of Adam”. God showed true love for all mankind and still does not interfere in human free will. Does this mean that he will never interfere in human affairs? No!! Remember, He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. So please reform your lives. Reformation and repentance was also his preaching and teaching along with the Kingdom of God being at hand.
Until next time, Laus Tibi, Christe. Deo Gratias. Praise be to God. See you in Paradise.
