How Christ Secretly Teaches the Human Heart
Looking to deepen your spiritual life in 2023 following the maxims of the great master of Carmelite spirituality, St. John of the Cross?
The Centre for Applied Carmelite Spirituality in the UK is offering a unique online reflection series led by renowned scholar, Dr. Susan Muto.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore the spirituality of the 16th century mystic and writer, under the direction of a world-renowned expert in the field. Participants will not only study St. John's writings, but also meet online via video once a month to interact with Dr. Muto.
The course, titled "The Sayings of Light and Love," is based on Dr. Muto's upcoming book on the spirituality of St. John of the Cross. It offers a perfect way to deepen one's prayer life, draw closer to God and others, and learn from a leading authority in Christian spirituality.
Dr. Muto is a respected leader in the field of spirituality literature and is the executive director of the Epiphany Association, as well as the dean of the Epiphany Academy of Formative Spirituality in Pittsburgh, PA. She has written or co-written over 60 books on Catholic spirituality.
The Centre for Applied Carmelite Spirituality (CACS) is a leading authority on applied Carmelite spirituality and is dedicated to promoting the renewal and growth of the spiritual life through retreats, study programs, and training. Its flagship program, the Spiritual Direction Formation Programme, is unique and attracts participants from all over the world.
The course will consist of an online video meeting on the last Tuesday of each of 12 months, starting Jan. 31, 2023. It will be led by Dr. Muto and a Carmelite friar. Participants will receive 15 sayings of St. John of the Cross each month, along with discussion questions.
These pithy quotes of St. John are often passed over in his writings, and Dr. Muto’s selections will bring them to light. Participants are encouraged to meditate on the sayings and keep a journal of their reflections.
The Centre's online programs have been well-received, with a recent Advent online retreat attracting nearly 400 members. Its publishing house, Teresian Press Publications, offers print, audio, and video productions.
Carmelite spirituality is centered around a journey of the heart and is described as "like the exodus experience of God's people and their meeting with the Lord in the wilderness." St. John of the Cross, along with St. Teresa of Avila, founded the Discalced Carmelite Order in the 1500s and their spirituality appeals to friars, consecrated persons, and laypeople alike.
This online reading series is open to anyone looking to deepen their spiritual life and grow in love for God and others. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with the spirituality of St. John of the Cross under the direction of a world-renowned scholar.
