Saint John Bosco (1815-1888), also known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Catholic priest and educator. He is the patron saint of young people, of editors, of Catholic education, and of youth organizations. He is also the patron saint of orphans, young apprentices, and juvenile delinquents.
John Bosco was born on August 16th, 1815 in Becchi, Italy. He was the youngest of three children. He was raised by his mother, Margherita, who taught him to be a hard worker. Through his mother's teachings, Bosco developed a deep spiritual life, and he was known to pray the Rosary every night. At the age of 14, John Bosco entered seminary. In 1841 he was ordained a priest, and he set out to serve the young people of Turin, Italy. He soon became known as the "Apostle of Youth." He started numerous schools, and he was one of the first to begin teaching vocational skills to poor youths. He was also the founder of the Salesian Society and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
John Bosco dedicated his life to the education and spiritual formation of young people. He was known for his great patience, kindness, and compassion. He was often seen playing with the kids, and he would often tell them stories to illustrate his teachings. He was also a great organizer and fundraiser, and was able to build several churches and schools to serve the youth of Turin.
John Bosco died on January 31st, 1888. He was canonized on Easter Sunday, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. His feast day is celebrated on January 31st.
