Saints Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal — Good Spiritual Direction Can Go Both Ways
By Fr. Alexander Ezechukwu, OCD
Discernment of one's vocation is often a struggle.
I've talked to lots of young men about it. But if you are open to God's graces and take the right steps, you will find your calling.
It is no accident that we are here on this earth, afloat in this vast universe—God has created us with a purpose in mind. First and foremost, that purpose is to know, love, and serve God. But we will do these most effectively when we discover what God had in mind for our lives, even before He "knitted me together in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13). "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand" (Ephesians 2:10).
Just as certain is the color of your eyes and your hair, so is just as certain the purpose—the vocation—for which God made you. First and foremost, you are a reflection of the infinite splendor of God's majesty. God has called you to shine bright as a light of His Love. But He has called you to do so in a particular way. The very act of creating you was the beginning of your vocation. God called you into existence for a specific purpose. As you grow and mature, God expects you to discover that purpose.
When described in this way, discernment can possibly sound out of reach or even impossible. Fear not. One of the greatest gifts God has given you is free will. By exercising free will in your discernment—while striving to live a life of holiness—you will always be pleasing to God. Don't worry if you are going to "get it wrong" when it comes to finding your vocation. What is important is that you are exercising "the freedom of the glory of the children of God" (Romans 8:21).
I urge you today to take some time with God to dive deeper into this self-discovery of God's built-in purpose for your life. Just remember to not get too caught up in the period of waiting. Instead, listen to God's reminder of the most important truth you can ever discover: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine" (Isaiah 43:1).
