On Interior Mortification
In these times, it can be hard to find quality schools, particularly colleges, that teach traditional values and core principles that matter to Catholics who are more traditionally minded or wish to return to a more traditional education and environment without the influence of secular ideologies. The Collegium Sanctorum Angelorum, or the College of the Holy Angels, is a new, four-year liberal arts college located in Hagerstown, Maryland, that aims to highlight the beauty in tradition and return to the fundamental aspects of a classical Catholic education.
Before I go any further, I should mention that my brother works as a professor at the Collegium, so I may not be entirely unbiased. But it is a pretty incredible college.
The Collegium is brand-new, having just welcomed its first class in 2021, and they offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Liberal Arts, with a core curriculum that includes theology, philosophy, history, English, literature, logic, rhetoric, Latin, math, science, music, and art. In addition to academic formation, the spiritual formation at the Collegium includes a tight-knit residential community that is centered on prayer, including the Traditional Latin Mass and some parts of the Divine Office. The college also provides work experience through the Ora et Labora program that every student participates in. With invaluable work experience and a contemplative spiritual formation that accompanies the students’ academic studies, the Collegium, as it states on its website, focuses on preparing students for heaven whereas other colleges claim to just prepare them for life.
If you are frustrated with the state of college education today and would like a more traditional and prayer-centered approach, or you know someone who is currently looking at colleges, you can find out more about the Collegium by visiting their website. They are currently accepting applications for fall 2023.
