Holy Family Reflection
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation. One of the most prominent feasts that are depicted at the beginning of the Gospel of Luke.
Here is the passage:
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
The angel came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled by his words and wondered in her heart what this salutation could mean.
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom, there will be no end.”
Mary said to the angel, “How will this be since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. And behold, your cousin Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” After this, the angel departed from her. (Luke 1: 26-38)
This passage shares with us how Mary gave her yes to fulfilling God’s plan of being the mother of God. Through Mary, we see a model of great humility. Her humble “yes” changed the course of salvation history forever.
We too can give our yes to the will of God. It takes a leap of faith and great fortitude to do what is of God and not of the world.
Today, say “yes” to what God is asking you to do. We may not have the answers, but God will provide.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us
