A Relationship With The Holy Spirit
Submitted by Thomas Stidl
How does a person acquire a relationship with the Holy Spirit? Let’s answer that question by determining who the Holy Spirit is and what He does.
The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Blessed Trinity. He is the love between the Father and Jesus. As we develop a relationship between the Father and Jesus we begin to experience the actions of the Holy Spirit. We first receive Him in the sacrament of Baptism. As we mature, we begin to pray and experience the love between the Father and the Son. We experience Him in the reception of the sacraments of the Church. When we receive the sacrament of Confirmation, we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
When we are taking an exam in school and forget something, then all of a sudden it comes to mind; that is the Holy Spirit at work. His love for us is as great as His love between the Father and Jesus. So the beginning question of how do I develop a relationship with Him has a clear-cut answer.
Say Thank You to the Holy Spirit for all his inspirations and acknowledge his presence within you. As you continue to sense Him in your life, and acknowledge Him, you then become a great friend of His. Talk to Him. Ask Him for help in your daily life. Remember, the Holy Spirit resides deep within your soul and being. Never commit a mortal sin. You must always be in a state of sanctifying grace for Him to reside within you.
If you ever have the misfortune of committing a mortal or grievous sin, pray the perfect act of contrition by telling God of your sorrow, that you love Him so deeply, and will got to confession as soon as possible. This puts the soul into a temporary state of sanctifying grace. However, with mortal sin you must receive sacramental absolution in order to receive the Eucharist which is a very important shield from all the wickedness and snares of the devil. The sacraments of Confession and the Holy Eucharist give you the actual graces to resist sins of all kinds.
The Holy Spirit is your friend and guide. Keep your soul light so the Divine Wind of the Holy Spirit may place you where He wants you to be of great service to the Triune Godhead. That is the greatest relationship that I can reveal to you. Taking a verse from President John Kennedy’s inauguration address to the nation, in this manner God’s work on earth will truly be our own.
Until next time, Laus Tibi, Christe. Deo Gratias. Gloria Tibi Domini. Praise be to God. See you in Paradise. Amen.
