Fundamentals of Lent and Suggestions
Jesus was looking for friendly faces as he walked the path to Mt. Calvary. He even needed help. He was weak. He was a helpless victim of a false crime.
The Fourth Station: Jesus Meets His Afflicted Mother
Reflection: Jesus bore jeers, mockery, and even spits from heartless members of the crowd. As you were looking all around, you sought the help of friendly faces. We too seek those friendly people. For you, you looked no further than your mother who first held you on the cold Christmas night in Bethlehem. Sometimes, we can’t do things on our own. Those who stood by us through thick and thin will stand out in the crowd willing to help.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to find those sturdy friends to be with me when life gets hard. Help me find people who can build me up while the world tears me down. Send faithful friends who can provide sturdy shelter, a tentative ear, and words of charity needed to overcome those who damage my heart. Amen
The Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus with His Cross
Reflection: People ask for help. How often do we not hear their plea? The soldiers saw how you couldn’t continue unless someone is willing to carry the cross the rest of the way. In the midst of the crowd came Simon of Cyrene who was just passing by. We too need people to help guide and walk with us. Though a stranger Simon was propelled to walk the journey with Jesus.
Prayer: Jesus, your face is on every person asking for food, water, and even clothes when everyone else has access to them. Send people to help the needy in their time of need. When I don’t have the answers or clarity of my faith journey, help me find the right person that can get me on the right path in following you. Help send those willing to follow your way to heaven and not the path to hell. Amen
