A look at Saint Wenceslaus: A Royal Duke and a Model of Christian Virtue

Saint Wenceslaus, also known as Saint Wenceslas, was a Bohemian prince and martyr who lived in the 10th century. He is the patron saint of the Czech Republic and is celebrated on September 28th as the country's national saint.

Wenceslaus was born in 907, the son of Duke Vratislav I of Bohemia. He was raised in a Christian household and was educated by his grandmother, Saint Ludmila, who instilled in him a strong faith in God. Despite his noble birth, Wenceslaus lived a simple and pious life, dedicating himself to God and to the service of his people. Wenceslaus lived in a time when Christianity was still dawning in central Europe. 

As a young man, Wenceslaus succeeded his father as Duke of Bohemia and quickly made a name for himself as a just and compassionate ruler. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his subjects, building schools, hospitals and churches and protecting the poor and oppressed. He also promoted the spread of Christianity throughout his realm, earning him the nickname "Good King Wenceslaus."

Wenceslaus died in 929 when his younger brother Boleslaus, who had grown resentful of his brother's popularity and influence, murdered Wenceslaus on the feast of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian. Wenceslaus was killed in front of the church of Saint Vitus in Prague and his body was buried in the same church. The body was later moved to the St. Vitus Cathedral. This event is commemorated on September 28th, which is the feast of Saint Wenceslaus.

In the centuries following his death, Wenceslaus's cult grew in popularity and he was eventually canonized by Pope Pius II in the 15th century. Today, Saint Wenceslaus is remembered as a model of Christian virtue and a symbol of Czech national identity.

In addition to being the patron saint of the Czech Republic, Saint Wenceslaus is also the patron saint of Bohemia and Moravia, and of the city of Prague. He is also invoked against headaches, gout and eye troubles.
