Soaring Like an Eagle
Today, as I think of an upcoming visit over Christmas with some of my grandchildren, I start to have an imaginary talk with those grandchildren living down there. I wanted to ask them, “What do your friends say about God?” I wanted to ask them what are some of the basic reasons “why they may not believe in God?” As these children grow it would be interesting to hear what they are hearing. So, I am curious as to what are they thinking, for it is sad to say, but most of my families, grandchildren have no or iffy beliefs about God.
To me, for a young growing child—who long ago lost belief in Santa Claus—their reason might be---“because I cannot see God.” This sounds like a good logical conclusion to believe He does not exists. If this is the reason that they bring up; God is nowhere to be seen, then I hope that would be a good place to start further discussion. I would like to ask the children ---what else is not seen ----but we know is there.
Start with air, and keep the examples going. Thoughts, words spoken, feelings, warmth of the sun, a nut in the shell, the brain in our head, the microscopic blood cells, electrolytes, smells, to name a few. Oh and then there are all of the elements that we can find in all living matter. Children should be able to grasp without a doubt this comparison to the existence of God even though you cannot see Him, for all of these ‘things’ are there. All of these elements are there and without them, we cannot live. Just without God, we would have no life. (I think it is more than interesting that God chose to use air, fire, light, water and examples of WHO HE IS. Have you ever noticed God loves to leave clues in what is written, spoken and told of in the Bible?)
If there would be one last thing I would speak to the children on this subject, it would be this: We cannot see God because He is a Being so BIG and Mighty, like the ocean, the tallest mountains, the planets, countries, even a huge building or a small house. You can never see any of these items, you know they exist, but to see the whole of it—you cannot!! Only the part of what is in front of your eyes can you say “I see it.” The part but NEVER the whole. So it is with God—we can only see what is in front of our eyes—anything of nature that He created, any person, any part of our body, anything that is present—there is God, and that is why He is the I AM and can say “I am with you always.” Using the example of our own hand, we can show how we see the hand but not all of the hand. Only the front, or the back and not what is within—only what you can see is what you SEE!
Do you SEE what I am saying? Are my WORDS clear enough for even a child to understand? Remember, the Word was spoken and there was LIGHT. With our wise words, understanding and hopefully a new found BELIEF in GOD could begin within. Look out grandchildren, grandma's coming to town.
As Christmas approaches this would be a great time to take the opportunity to ask your children, what are your friends saying about the existence of God? For the topic of ‘is Santa Claus real or not’ is probably a big hot one at school. Sharing or talking about your faith should start at home, and listen to what they say too—for out of the mouths of babes—you shall become wiser. As always, Peace of the Lord be with you all.
