We honor Saint John Paul II: A Champion for Human Rights and Dignity of Life

Saint John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyla, was a truly remarkable Pope of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 1978 until his death in 2005.

John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland, and was ordained a priest in 1946. He served as the Archbishop of Krakow before being elected as Pope in 1978, becoming the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. He was also the second longest-serving pope in history, after Pope Pius IX. 

John Paul II is best known for his extensive travels throughout the world, his leading role in the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the fall of the Soviet Union and his work to improve interfaith relations. He was also a prolific writer, authoring 14 encyclicals, 11 apostolic exhortations, 11 apostolic constitutions, and 45 apostolic letters, as well as numerous other works.

John Paul II was a champion of human rights and the dignity of life. He was also known for his strong pro-life stance and his opposition to contraception and divorce. He was a man of strong convictions and tireless energy, and he was hugely influential in the modern Catholic Church.

One of the most memorable events of John Paul II's papacy was his visit to Poland in 1979. His visit brought together millions of people in a celebration of faith, and his message of hope and patriotism had a profound impact on the nation. He also visited the United States in 1979, becoming the first Pope to do so.

John Paul II was known for his love of sports, particularly soccer and skiing. He was a skier himself, and he even participated in a ski race at one point in his life. He was also a great lover of theatre and music, and he wrote several plays during his lifetime.

He is the patron saint of the young, World Youth Day, families, Europe and Divine Mercy. 

John Paul II was canonized on April 27th, 2014, and his feast day is celebrated on October 22nd. He was declared a Servant of God on May 18th, 2005, and he was declared Venerable on December 19th, 2009. He was beatified on May 1st, 2011. 

Saint John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. His death was met with widespread mourning and his funeral was attended by leaders from around the world. He was a truly remarkable man and leader who left an indelible mark on the Catholic Church and the world. He will forever be remembered for his tireless work to promote peace, justice, and human dignity.
