Saint Damien of Molokai
There is a tendency for the human spirit to turn a blind eye to troubles looming; for example, one day I noticed that my old car was making a strange noise under the hood. Instead of dealing with it, I turned the radio up louder. It turned out that it was a belt that had come loose, and what could have been a minor repair became an expensive one very quickly. I turned a blind eye, because I was afraid of what it might cost to repair my car. In the coming weeks, I will be writing a seven part series of articles on the subject of the “passion of the Church”. In this series, I am going to apply my car analogy to the Church today. There are problems within the Church. Problems which have been caused by coordinated, derisive attacks against Catholic values and doctrines, and unfortunately they have become so engrained within our culture that the vast majority of Catholics accept them. These attacks may have started out small and subtle, but over time they have grown to such a staggering degree we can no longer ignore them.
These problems however, can be battled. We, as Catholic individuals, can diagnose these problems and do our best to fix them within our state in life. We will not address these problems within the Church as did Martin Luther or John Calvin; we will address them as Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross, maturely and rationally, following the doctrines of the Church and with the salvation of souls in mind. In each article, I will address the problem, its history, why it is a problem, and then address the solution. The articles will be published one at a time every Friday evening on a weekly basis:
The Passion of the Church, part I: The Modernist Attack on the Family and the sacrament of Matrimony
The Passion of the Church, part II: The Modernist Attack on Feminine Dignity
The passion of the Church, part III: The Modernist Attack on Absolute Truth
The Passion of the Church, part IV: The Modernist Attack on the Most Holy Eucharist
The Passion of the Church, Part V: The Modernist Attack on the Holy Priesthood
The Passion of the Church, Part VI: The Modernist Attack on Tradition
The Passion of the Church, Part VII: The Looming Persecution of the Church in America
It is not my goal in writing these articles to be controversial, although certain controversial topics will arise. If I seem brisk, and even critical at times of some current Catholic Church practices, it is not because I am hostile to the Catholic faith. I pledge allegiance to Pope Francis as supreme Pontiff and Bishop of Rome, and I am practicing Roman Catholic in good standing. I am addressing these hard issues because I want each and every one of you to get to heaven one day, and I will try my best in this forum to help get you there. Please pray for me. For the glory of God and the salvation of souls, Amen.
