How Can Twenty Minutes Be So Hard to Find?
I’ve been a songwriter most of my life, even before I first picked up a guitar around age seven. My earliest efforts consisted of making up stuff to sing, pretending I was a rock star with a microphone made of Tinker Toys.
Among the best things to ever happen to me is that I never got anywhere with those childhood dreams of the Billboard Top 10. Writing songs as an obscure amateur got me through a lot of typical teen and young adult angst back in the day, gave me a way to bond with kindred spirits in a wannabe 1980s band, and has given me opportunities to make people happy with parody-song tribute roasts over the years. It's been a fun and cathartic hobby.
There has always been some Christian material among my songs, as well, but not exactly like the Christian songs I used to listen to on country radio back in the day. Mine have always had a Catholic flavor.
Hmmm. What would be a Catholic flavor? Myrhh Chocolate Chip? But I digress.
During the pandemic lockdowns, when there was a lot of time on our hands as a nation, I began focusing exclusively on writing about being Catholic and celebrating various aspects of the faith. I’ve got a bunch of those songs now. Some are from earlier days, but most from the past few years, and I’d like to share them—and those that follow—with anyone interested in hearing them, along with the observatiions and discoveries behind them
I’m not selling CDs or downloads, just offering an opportunity to hear some songs you might enjoy and, God willing, in which you might hear something that benefits your faith journey.
The first number I'd like to share borrows its melody from a song I once wrote about wanting to be an actor in New York (rock star, actor…I never had a single realistic ambition in my youth). The song is now about the fabulous life God had in store for me in place of my little fantasies.
Hear the song here, or the lyric video here.
I hope this one resonates with other Catholic husbands and fathers who, like me, are doing their best to be the men God made us to be. That includes all you stout-hearted guys out there who are taking advantage of programs like Exodus 90. I admire your fortitude. Who knows? Maybe some of my stuff will qualify as the uplifting music E90 recommends!
