20 Latin Phrases That You Already Know
Latin remains the official language of the Roman Catholic Church and every church document is named by their first words which are always in Latin. They may call Latin a dead language but some phrases and words refused to go quietly in the night. They continue to rage against the dying of the light. Maybe these words and phrases can be considered the residual effect of our pre-Vatican II grandparent's generation having to study Latin in school.
I asked my wife what Latin words or phrases she knew and she immediatley replied 'None'. I responded, "That's not true. You know some...how about 'Agnus Dei'?"
We both went to public school. Needless to say there was zero Latin intentionally taught. I have been to Latin mass only a few times in my life but mostly attend mass in the vernacular where basicly the Agnus Dei seems to be the only Latin remnant.
Some of the Church document names have stuck. Other phrases are from Christmas carols and some are just well known, like Corpus Christi. Others, like e pluribus unum, are not really religious.
Here's what we came up with. It turns out we both knew more Latin than we thought...
