Feast Day of Saint Camillus de Lellis: From Gambler to a Life of Service to the Sick and Dying

Saint Camillus de Lellis is a Catholic saint who is widely known for his compassion and dedication to helping the sick and the poor. He is the patron saint of hospitals, nurses, the sick, and healthcare workers. Born on May 25th, 1550, in Bucchianico, Italy, he spent most of his life serving the sick and the needy, and his legacy continues to inspire people worldwide.

Camillus de Lellis was born into a noble family, but he struggled with gambling and other vices throughout his early life. He eventually became a skilled soldier, and his military career led him to fight in several wars, including the war between Venice and Turkey. However, due to his temper and gambling addiction, he was discharged from the army and left penniless. He was also left with a chronic leg injury that failed to heal over the course of his life.  

After experiencing a profound conversion, Camillus de Lellis dedicated his life to serving the sick and the poor. He studied to become a priest and founded the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the sick (also known as the Camillians) in 1582. The order was established to care for the sick and dying, especially during times of war and epidemics.

Camillus de Lellis was known for his dedication to the sick, often risking his life to help those afflicted by various illnesses. He was also a pioneer in the field of healthcare, as he introduced several innovations that helped improve the care of the sick and dying.

Furthermore, Saint Camillus de Lellis was famous for his humility, and he often prayed for the healing of the sick, sometimes performing miracles. He also had a great love for the Blessed Sacrament and encouraged his fellow priests and followers to receive it often.

Saint Camillus de Lellis died on July 18th, 1614, in Rome, Italy, and was canonized as a saint on June 29th, 1746, by Pope Benedict XIV. His feast day is celebrated on July 18th, the anniversary of his death. In addition, he is also remembered on February 18th, the day he founded the Camillians, and on May 25th, his birthday.
