Saint Alphonsus Liguori was a renowned Italian bishop, and theologian. He was born on September 27th, 1696, in Marianella, near Naples, Italy and was the eldest of seven children. His parents were devout Catholics who instilled in him a deep love for God and the Church.
Alphonsus received his doctorate in civil and canon law at the young age of sixteen. He practiced law for a while but eventually realized that his true calling was in the service of the Church. He was ordained a priest at the age of thirty and devoted himself to preaching missions to the poor and marginalized.
One of Alphonsus' most significant contributions was his development of moral theology. He wrote numerous works on the subject, including "Theologia Moralis," which is still considered a standard text in Catholic theology. His writings emphasized the importance of mercy, especially towards those who have sinned or fallen astray.
In 1732, Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, whose mission was to preach the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned. The Redemptorists quickly grew in popularity and became one of the most significant religious orders in the Catholic Church.
Alphonsus was also a prolific composer of hymns and songs. He wrote over 100 works, including the famous Christmas carol, "Tu scendi dalle stelle" (From Starry Skies Thou Comest). At the age of 66 he became Bishop of Saint Agatha, near Naples and undertook the reform of his diocese with the zeal of a Saint.
Saint Alphonsus died on August 1st, 1787, at the age of 90. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI on May 26th, 1839. His feast day is celebrated on August 1st. In 1871 he was named a doctor of the church by Pope Pius IX. In 1950 he was named patron saint of moralists and confessors by Pope Pius XII.
