Powerful Prayers
Saint Joseph Calasanz was a renowned educator and the founder of the Pious Schools, also known as the Order of Piarists. He lived during a time of great turmoil in Europe, but his devotion to education and care for the less fortunate made him an inspiration for many.
Joseph Calasanz was born on September 11th, 1557, in Peralta de la Sal, Huesca, Spain. His parents were Pedro Calasanz and Maria Gastón, and he was baptized with the name Joseph Anthony. He was the youngest of eight siblings, and his father was a wealthy cloth merchant. Joseph was a gifted student, and he completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the University of Lérida at an early age.
In 1583, Joseph was ordained a priest in Rome, Italy. He then worked as a chaplain in various hospitals and jails in the city. It was during this time that he became acutely aware of the poor state of education among the children of the poor. Joseph was deeply disturbed by this situation and resolved to do something about it.
In 1597, Joseph opened the first Pious School in Rome, with the aim of providing free education to poor children. He was joined in this venture by two other priests, and they eventually formed the Order of Piarists. The Piarists focused on educating children from poor families and provided them with skills such as reading, writing, arithmetic, and catechism. Over time, the Piarists opened schools in other parts of Europe, and the order spread rapidly.
Joseph faced many challenges during his life, including opposition from other religious orders and political instability in Europe. However, he persevered in his mission to provide education to the poor, and his efforts were recognized by Pope Clement VIII, who granted his order the status of a religious congregation in 1617.
Saint Joseph Calasanz died on August 25th, 1648, in Rome. He was canonized by Pope Clement XIII on July 16th, 1767 and his feast day is celebrated on August 25th. In addition to being the patron saint of Catholic schools, educators, and the young, he is also the patron saint of the Pious Schools and the Piarists.
Saint Joseph Calasanz was a man of great vision and compassion, and his legacy lives on through the work of the Piarists and other organizations dedicated to providing education to those in need.
