Prophetic Warning from Beloved 20th Century Bishop
The Catholic Church sets aside the month of October as Respect Life Month. Much has changed since 1973’s barbaric Supreme Court as 63 million lives have been lost to the false rhetoric of choice. The good news is that the gauntlet has been laid out for every pro-lifer to begin building a post-Roe society now.
The fight for the unborn has not ended with the Dobbs v Jackson decision in June 2022. It continues at the local and state level to the point where pro-lifers must continue proclaiming the message of life from womb to tomb to everyone. It is not a weekly thing. It is a daily act. Bear in mind, when it comes to respecting life, we must remember to protect all life from womb to tomb.
Here are ways every pro-life Catholic can help build a culture of life now.
Write Op-Eds
Believe it or not, people are still reading the newspaper (for now). It is one thing to do it for mediums where one can preach to the choir. It can have a bigger impact if it finds its way to a mainstream outlet like the New York Times. Some op-eds can range from former abortion worker to regretting your abortion and all pro-life stories in between.
Write Pro-Life Stories
The saying goes that the pen is mightier than the sword. There is some truth to that. Writing can be a powerful way to help articulate the message of life. Whether it’s about how an unwed mom chooses life while overcoming internal and external pressure or how a nurse exposes the injustice done to premature babies, these stories can help shape and move ignorant minds.
Take Part in Weekly Vigils
One of the most effective ways to put pro-life views into action is stepping out onto the sidewalk. The trick is to pray. Yes, people will jeer, intimidate, and even give salty looks, yet putting the pro-life conviction into action shows that one is taking sides in the debate. The best thing to do is just be there praying quietly or out loud if with a group of people. Retired? In between jobs? Off school? Go out and pray outside of abortion facilities.
Blog About Efforts
Since the advent of the internet, it has opened the door to helping many get their messages out. One way to do it is blogging about events held in the pro-life community at large. Be sure to include a picture or two. Some may want to create a slideshow from the event.
Sponsor A Student for Fundraisers
Whether they are in college or high school, students may be stretched thin to afford a ticket for annual pro-life dinners or banquets. Consider sponsoring a ticket for the student to attend the dinner. Some are balancing academics, work, and even pro-life activism and they need the help to attend pro-life dinners to network and be inspired by the event.
Write to Homebound
Some can show that they care by writing cards to those who are homebound or are fighting terminal illnesses. If memory serves us right, visiting the sick does not have to be in person but a simple act of charity can go a long way especially sending a card. Something to also consider during the Christmas season
Give Food and Drink to Homeless Beggar
It may be easy to assume that they want money. Some are not comfortable giving a dollar to them and that’s okay. Maybe there’s an extra sandwich that should be given to that beggar on the street. It will go a long way. Focus on the one.
Help Someone Contemplating Suicide
Recently, a new hotline has been set up for the benefit of those who are contemplating suicide. What great timing for it. Meanwhile, we must be vigilant of those who seem like they may self-implode through their struggles with mental illness. Suicide can pass their hurts on to their loved ones. We can help that person understand that the world needs him or her.
From womb to tomb, God created every human life in his image and likeness. The harm done to any human is an abomination to his creation. Let us strive to build a culture of life today through our charitable example as God's merciful missionaries.
