Poor Self-Esteem, Causes And Cures
By Eileen Renders October 21, 2023
Poor self-esteem is best described as a feeling that one is of less value, or importance than their peers. It is usually traced back to childhood when life began for them with an awareness of having less than others and being poor. Sadly, this emotional issue is often caused by parental neglect, or feelings of intellectual inferiority due to poor grades in School. Perhaps, not being accepted into a popular group in high school, not making the Baseball team, and a whole basket of other types of rejection leading to feelings of failure, or not being good enough.
Oftentimes, we may have heard it said; “what caused the roof to cave in”? One could dwell on that for days, however, another individual will bypass that question and get right to the question of what is the best way to fix this problem and get it done quickly.
The point is not to dwell too much on the negative aspect of a situation but rather move forward with one’s thinking as to how one can repair the harm that has been done, in this case emotionally. As a Catholic, it is good to be reminded that each one of us was created by God, and God does not want any of us to feel that He would not be receptive to our desire to know Him and love Him. Low self-esteem it appears can have very different beginnings, and create roadblocks to our advancement and spiritual growth in life.
Anyone suffering from a distorted sense of worth, it is hoped will realize that this is in conflict with what our God wants for us, and should seek professional counseling. Also, this is a state of mind that usually has nothing to do with one’s actions, such as having caused it themselves. Possibly, in severe cases, this condition might keep someone from going to God in prayer for His mercy and love, which is in exact contract with what God wants.
