Are We Drowning in a Sea of Self-Pity?
Self-pride or Self-respect? Defined For Us
Eileen Renders December 2023
Self-pride is synonymous with self-esteem, a sense of pride in one’s self. Other descriptions include; pride, pridefulness with a sense of self-respect and personal worth. A problem could occur however whenever one sees him or herself too prideful to the point of boasting, or feel that their sense of worth or value in the world is out of proportion. This imbalance can become so noticeable to others that they may turn away in annoyance.
Self-respect is defined as those who have pride and confidence in oneself. Their personality and demeanor are to always present themselves in a behaving way with honor and dignity. Not expecting a lot of notice from others. Always desiring to work to care for themselves and their family. This is a type of respect that is equally shared with others.
With these defined descriptions it is clearer for each of us to take a personal inventory of ourselves so that we can work at a good level of self-respect, and be reminded that Pridefulness is a sin.
Whatever gifts we are given are just that, given to us by God and meant to be shared with others, rather than to boast about how great we are. Most people are attracted to those who are humble and want to graciously share their talent or time with others. And of course, most of us also want to shy away from those who seek praise and recognition as this is not of God.
