Galatians 1:8, and preaching "another gospel"
"Now the whole earth had one language, and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there, And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly". And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.". And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they will propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech." So the LORD dispersed them from there over the face of the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of the all the earth.". (Genesis 11:1-9)
So, there are time when I come on the interwebs, and I have to ask "are we speaking the same language"? I see the words, but, I don't understand the meaning. Keep in mind, I am (a very poor) polyglot. Sometimes, I'd be better off reading it in French. I hear "repentance", you hear "unrepentant sinner", I hear "Synod on Synodality", you hear "Pope Francis is commie", I say "UFO", you say "demons". We both say Bishop Strickland was removed, you say "It was for being conservative and pro-life", and I say "Let's wait until we find out why before forming a judgement". You know, the gift of tongues is supposed to be the antidote to the Tower of Babbel. I think a lot of people who think they have the Holy Spirit on their side, have fallen victim to Babel.
So, are we speaking the same language? I think it's possible that, as humans, it's very easy to hear our own voice and mistake it for the voice of God. Not to say God doesn't ever talk to you, of course he does. But, I think sometimes we can be convinced of our own righteousness (see Luke 18:9-14).
"When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now, there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound, the multitude came together and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language." (Acts 2:1-6) Okay, so, I'll let you read the rest. But, the whole reason that the Holy Spirit gave the gift of tongues, was for universal proclamation of the gospel. How do we evangelize if we're always so suspicious of our brother and our Church leaders? Without the Holy Spirit, we CAN'T do that.
May the Holy Spirit help us to understand one another.
