The Christmas Truce was a miraculous "unofficial ceasefire along the Western Front of the First World War for Christmas 1914.

Roughly 100,000 British and German troops were involved in the informal cessations of hostility along the Western Front. The Germans placed candles on their trenches and on Christmas trees, then continued the celebration by singing Christmas carols. The British responded by singing carols of their own.

The two sides continued by shouting Christmas greetings to each other. Soon thereafter, there were excursions across No Man's Land, where small gifts were exchanged, such as food, tobacco, alcohol, and souvenirs such as buttons and hats. The artillery in the region fell silent. The truce also allowed a breathing spell where recently killed soldiers could be brought back behind their lines by burial parties. Joint services were held. In many sectors, the truce lasted through Christmas night, continuing until New Year's Day in others.

An account by Llewelyn Wyn Griffith, recorded that after a night of exchanging carols, dawn on Christmas Day saw a "rush of men from both sides... [and] a feverish exchange of souvenirs" before the men were quickly called back by their officers, with offers to hold a ceasefire for the day and to play a football match. It came to nothing, as the brigade commander threatened repercussions for lack of discipline and insisted on a resumption of firing in the afternoon.

The commander of 10th Army, Victor d'Urbal, wrote of the "unfortunate consequences" when men "become familiar with their neighbours opposite".

Of course, officers were not happy: fraternising would lower the support of soldiers to that war. In fact, the very essence of war is dehumanizing the enemy.

It's always the people suffering from being cannon fodder for self-destroying wars. If Putin, Zelensky, Netanyahu, Biden, Macron, Meloni and other Eurpean leaders would have to lead the battles there would probably be peace in seconds.

The first victim of any war isn't truth, it's humanity.

Also, children are cannon fodder in their parent's petty wars ... which even end up in abortions.

This Christmas (the season lasts until Jan 7th), let's pray for peace for all, so that love (Christ) reignts in the hearts of all, Christians and non-Christians.

PS Please, stop those saying that Israel deserves to obliterate Gaza to destroy Hamas forever, even at the expense of the "collateral damage" of thousands of innocent children and handicapped (like those being taken care of by the sisters of Mother Thersa of Calcutta who can't evacuate).

 Before Hamas, it was the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine. If the injustice persists, even if destroyed, Hamas will be replaced by another name. The root of Hamas is injustice: that's why Pope Francis asks for a 2-State solution with Jerusalem with a special international status, to be shared by Israel, Palestine, and religions.
