Benedictine Father Bede Griffiths - the Catholic Mystic
In the profound words of Jesus, "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you... 'As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full."
The Master Of Life promised his disciples a sublime reality – that by dwelling in the divine presence and aligning their consciousness with the Christ Consciousness (see Thomas Kempis and "The Imitation of Christ"), they could manifest wonders through the universal creative principle.
Then Jesus shared with them words of profound significance, a message that resonates deeply within the hearts of all true devotees – the assurance that he loved them with the same divine, impartial, and eternal love that the Heavenly Father bestowed upon him. Contemplate, if you will, the magnitude of the love Jesus speaks of in those profound verses.
To experience that soulful love, which embraces all pure hearts, is to be transported into an ecstasy of joy so overwhelming that it cannot be contained – a surge of bliss coursing through one's being (the beautific vision), a myriad volts of rapturous power. This divine emotion eludes description, a communion of ineffable sweetness with Infinite Grace, Indescribable Glory, and Eternal Protection. Such is the love of God that Jesus felt, enveloping his disciples: "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love."
The Gospel encapsulates Jesus' words on this sacred occasion, yet readers must recognize – and endeavor to feel within themselves as if they were present – that behind these words resided the tangible vibratory presence of God ("In the beginning was the Word...."). During divine gatherings, such as Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, those open to receptivity experienced elevation into a heightened consciousness of God-perception, streaming into their hearts and minds as the Master speaks. This attunement enriches the devotee's consciousness in the most profound manner whenever he invokes Christ's grace within the inner sanctum of deep, reverent contemplation, prayer, and meditation.
