The Challenge of Being A Peacemaker
January 6th 2024.
"Tho shall not lie ". It's the Eighth Commandment. And while most practicing Catholics couldn't guess, sequentially, where it fell on the list of God's marching orders, they have been familiar with one of the three most significant Commandments in The Faith since childhood.
Three years ago, "after rioters took over the U.S. Capitol, threatening to hang former Vice President Mike Pence and forcing lawmakers to flee, many Republicans joined with Democrats in condemning the violence. Then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the mob attempting to overturn the election results had been provoked by former President Donald Trump. Former House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy called the destruction and chaos undemocratic. Senators and representatives demanded accountability. They called it a tragic day for America, an unimaginable display of anarchy not patriotism."
(The Washington Post)
That was the truth.
Today, on anniversary of THE MOST tragic day in American history, I watch the news. I listen to some Americans refute history. I hear them say: They believed the riot was led by violent left wing protesters. Or, they say, the infamous January 6th riots at The State Capitol didn't occur at all!
In Khaled Hosseini's novel, THE KITE RUNNER, we learn that: "When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth".
Today, as we mourn the death of Americans that perished on that unthinkable day and we recall the echo of Democracy's impending death nell, remember: Tho shall not lie.
