The Five First Saturdays Devotion
Lent is a sacred time in the Christian calendar, a period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. During Lent, we reflect on the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ in his final days on earth. One meaningful way to connect more deeply with Christ’s passion is through praying the Stations of the Cross.
The Stations of the Cross trace Jesus’ journey from being condemned to death, to his crucifixion, and finally his burial. At each of the 14 stations, we mediate on a specific event from Christ’s passion. As we move from station to station, we walk spiritually with Jesus on his agonizing road to Golgotha.
Praying the Stations of the Cross can greatly enrich our Lenten experience in the following ways:
It helps us reflect on Christ’s humanity. As we meditate on the pain and humiliation Jesus endured, we are reminded of his human vulnerability and his sacrifice for our salvation. This strengthens our understanding of God’s love for us.
1. It fosters compassion. By praying through the lens of Christ’s suffering, our hearts open up to those who are hurting or oppressed. The Stations of the Cross nurture empathy and compassion in us.
2. It draws us closer to Christ. Retracing Christ’s steps on the road to Calvary creates intimacy with Jesus in his darkest hour. This deepens our relationship with him.
3. It inspires sacrifice. Witnessing the depths of Christ’s love spurs us to offer our own sacrifices out of love for God and others. His ultimate sacrifice puts our Lenten penances into perspective.
4. It connects us to the worldwide Church. Praying the same devotion that has nurtured saints throughout history unites us more closely with the larger Body of Christ.
This Lent, walk with Jesus as he carries his cross to Calvary. Praying the Stations of the Cross can transform your experience of these 40 days, bringing you to a Holy Week renewed and inspired. With each station, discover anew the incomprehensible love of Christ.
