The Deceptive Allure of the Occult: How Celebrities Are Led Astray
When we or our loved ones approach death, the experience can be filled with immense fear, dread, and agony of spirit. Facing the end of this life brings up deep questions about what happens after we die. It strips away all of our earthly comforts and certainties. The physical pain of terminal illness also takes an agonizing toll.
As we walk through these “valley of the shadow of death” experiences, it can feel deeply isolating – like no one else can understand the unique torment we face. However, the accounts of Jesus’ night in the Garden of Gethsemane show that our Lord intimately understood and experienced such agony before going to the cross.
In Gethsemane, Jesus became “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). He fell facedown, sweating drops of blood, and cried out, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (Luke 22:42). Christ was dreading the immense physical suffering he was about to endure on the cross. But he was also bearing the weight of the sin of the entire world on his shoulders. This spiritual agony caused him unfathomable distress.
What’s so striking is that Jesus, the Son of God, was experiencing a level of fear, anguish, and sorrow like we face when death approaches. He was in such terror that he pleaded for another way. In his humanity, facing betrayal, torture, and death made him deeply troubled and overwhelmed.
Yet Jesus went through this agony not just as an example, but to take the sting out of death for us. By conquering death through his resurrection, Jesus became the “firstfruits” (1 Corinthians 15:20) paving the way for us to also defeat death and have eternal life. When we are dying, we can take comfort that Christ has walked ahead of us on that path.
We aren’t alone in our darkest, most anguished moments. Christ understands our torment in a deep, intimate way because he has been there himself. And he’s overcome death, opening the way for us to have victory as well. When we experience the fears and agonies that come in our final days, we can turn to the One who has traversed that harrowing road before and cling to his power over death.
