Last Saying of Jesus Part 7: Commending His Spirit
Lights. Camera. Action. Those are just the three words that we associate with filmmaking. Entertainment has not been what it used to be as of late. Look at the woke flops in the box office recently from out of touch big names. It will likely get worst if they continue this path. Authentic movies are needed.
Now, Angel Studios and its production team is not a one size fits all solution, yet they have the potential to revolutionize the saturated entertainment industry for years to come. Surely, many filmmakers would like to come out with films with actual entertainment that appeals to every audience that want to actually be entertained.
It began with The Sound of Freedom last summer as it defied expectations even when all was stacked against it. The movie itself was at the top of the box office even with a number one spot for weeks, defeating Disney releases and many other counterparts. Recently, Angel Studio has had some success with other films and now it will soon shake the box office with its recent release of Cabrini.
If Angel Studio wishes to continue this success, then it may be time to make films of certain holy men and women who are or will be saints in the Catholic Church. Maybe it’s time to consider five holy men and women worthy of a biopic.
Father Michael McGivney
It is long overdue to have a biopic on the life of Father Michael McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus. His legacy lives on with its more than 2 million members strong throughout the world.
Like Cabrini, Father McGivney (Blessed Michael McGivney) ministered to many Catholics in New Haven, CT. He worked tirelessly to tend to fatherless families. He held a meeting with two dozen men with the goal in mind to not let another Catholic family be abandoned. He even helped them avoid financial troubles through charitable system still used through the Knights of Columbus in its life insurance program. He needs one more miracle to earn the title of saint.
Father Walter Cizek
For those who have been doing the Pray40 challenge on Hallow may recall that Jonathan Roumie and Father Mike Schmitz lead listeners in the reading of He Leadeth Me. The book is a memoir about Father Walter Cizek’s experience as a political prisoner in the Soviet Union. Truth be told, this is worthy of being put on the big screen.
Fulton Sheen
Referred to as the “True son of the church” by Saint John Paul the Great, Fulton Sheen could really use a biopic. He was an Emmy winner, an orator, and a humble servant. Yet, he was dissed, and a victim of the cancel culture brought about by many who embraced communism. Sheen is still detained from sainthood by the very diocese that tried to silence him. It will be interesting to see how someone can pull off his biopic.
Ulma Family
Jozef and Wiktoria Ulma were just a family living on a farm in Poland. Then, Jews were escaping the tyrannical regime of Hitler. The family offered them refuge. Then, the Gestapo located them. Not only did the family vow to protect them, they were all murdered, including Wictoria's unborn child, by the Nazis.
The entire family was beatified last year. Only one can help the whole family propel them to sainthood with a miracle. It is worthy of having a movie that show how devout the family was until their lives were all taken away.
Karl and Zita von Habsburg
Imagine a husband saying to his wife as they walk down the aisle on their wedding day, “Now, let’s get to heaven” or something around those lines.
That is the case for Karl and Zita, the emperor and empress of Austria. They ruled in the years leading up to the Great War and are considered the last rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. The two went through so much betrayal and suffering that is considered a must make movie.
It can convey the message of fidelity to each other and overcoming betrayals from those who were considered friends and allies.
Maybe the list does not stop with five. Everyone would digress. Maybe there is an agreement on two dark horse picks, or some would consider an honorable mention. It is a challenge to come up with it for sure. Maybe it is also a call for other filmmakers to step up to the plate to help evangelize a demonic industry.
Dark Horse 1: Pope Benedict XVI
The late predecessor of Pope Francis should have a biopic brought to the big screen. He was not well liked as St. John Paul the Great, yet he overcame much during his time as a priest, bishop, cardinal, and even Holy Father. This humble servant was a staunch defender of tradition, and it is worthy to make a movie around how he was strong in preserving the church teachings despite the attacks from within the church. It may draw some... oh wait, never mind. The biggest critics are those who hate what the church stsand for and what he defended.
Dark Horse 2: St. Therese
The list would not be complete without the Little Flower. St. Therese is popular among many people especially for daughter’s name or confirmation saint. She also overcame so much to become a Carmelite nun while showing us the simplest way to heaven.
Surely, this list can get thicker. At the same time, it is just the beginning. Many of the above mention have stories that will permeate their message to today’s culture and help us return to God.
