January Novenas and Feast Days
Angel Studio recently tackled the life of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. The movie tells the story about an Italian religious sister who arrives to New York in hopes to tend to the needs of Italian immigrants who left Italy I hopes of a better future.
The movie captures the fierce trailblazer who overcame so much to help the marginalized and forgotten people in society. Some of the common remarks and critiques the movie lacked was her Catholic faith and seeking God. Well, it is expected in many movies. However, there has been more to it than just the lack of Catholicism in the film. This is in no way a defense for Angel Studio. Rather, it is a way to look at the bigger picture (pun intended).
Hits of the Movie
The cinematography was outstanding. It captured some of the most pivotal moments of the film. One was when Cabrini asked some of the wealthiest to help her purchase an abandoned building and turned it into a hospital to help everyone. Even the director shared about it with Raymond Arroyo.
The acting was ten times better than some of the recent Hollywood flops. The lead and supporting roles was solidify by callow and seasoned actors and actresses. Cristiana Dell'Anna nailed her role as Cabrini. Her delivery was unmatched and unbelievable.
The Movie Promotes Feminism
Not so. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was oppressed for sure. However, the movie is in no way promoting feminism. Instead, Cabrini, like many movie protagonists, had to overcome obstacles in order to complete her goal.
For St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, she wanted to build an empire of hope. She received a blessing from the pope to do so if she began in the west. Thus, it trajected her and her sisters to New York. If the movie had even an ounce of feminism, it would be that she would overtake men. Rather, she had to stand up to giants in business, politics, and even clergy. Her humility and steadfast courage were paramount in helping immigrants become citizens in the United States.
What The Movie Got Right
In of itself, the movie accurately capture what New York was like before the dawn of the 20th Century. Many Italians were living in the slumps of Five Points. Cabrini needed a way to bring attention to the children who are living in the poor conditions of the time.
It also tackled well Cabrini’s struggle to help those who were struggling, and challenging the men of power presented well in the film.
What Could Have Been Added
The Catholic faith could have been more present. Perhaps a director’s cut could come soon. Only time will tell. Another thing that was present in the film is some of dialogue could have been better. Granted, Cabrini was suppressed. The Catholic faith should have been added a bit more in the film, Again, time will tell if a director’s cut or special edition is in the works.
If anyone is looking for a good prep before or after seeing the film, Ignatius Press will release her biography “Too Small a World”. Order the book here.
The movie is a must see. 7 out of 10. Theaters have been selling out.
