Catholic Joy: Chesterton's Flying Inn
The root cause of many of the problems in our society today, such as debt and the absence of discipline, comes from the lack of strong men as heads of families. This article explores the proper roles of men and women, and how our society ignores the difficult things that are required of men to lead their families.
God created marriage, and the family, where men are created to lead and set the examples of courage, discipline, and strength. God created women with special talents to support their husbands and mind children and keep a hearth. In short, men are to lead and protect, while women are to nurture the hearth. There is nothing wrong with these natural differences between men and women. Our society disregards these proper rules. The Bible states that men are to be the head of the family, “Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. As the Church is subordinate to Christ, so should wives be subordinate to their husbands in everything.”
Many people do not understand that being a husband and a father means doing some very difficult things. One of them is putting your wife in her place, if need be. The wife cannot be the one to make all the decisions. This is necessary for the greater good of the family. That means telling your wife "no" sometimes, such as not going into outrageous debt to upgrade the house even if she thinks it would make her happy or look good on social media. It is also necessary to tell your wife no when she wants to go shopping without a budget. Being a father also means doing troublesome things, such as disciplining children. There’s a reason why the Bible says, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” Being a father means disciplining your children, making them behave during Mass, and taking them out when the noise level is disruptive during Mass and at other public places.
In conclusion, the men out there who fulfill their duties by doing the difficult things that come with being husbands and fathers are doing a wonderful service to restore the culture and bring much glory to God.
